Dear Division 3 Members,
Concerns about the issues with Aurizon’s digital/analogue radio conflicts and communication losses have been raised at Sub-Branch meetings. There have also been issues in depots where members have been instructed to use their personal mobile phone to contact loadout’s as there was no communication with the loadout and crews have also used their personal mobiles to setup trains which includes doing load and direction tests.
If you have been instructed to perform a safety critical task using your personal mobile phone, please contact Network Control (or Local Area Controller) and advise them you have a communications issue and ask them how they want you to proceed. This includes loading or unloading a train, starting up or shutting down a distributed power train or other train or any other safety critical task.
The AFULE position is that we do not use our personal mobile phone for communication regarding operational matters on a train unless in an emergency and you have no other means of communication. Loading, unloading and setting up trains is not an emergency.
Linked here is a feedback form where members can provide information regarding these issues.
Please enter the details of the date, time, location, train number and locomotive number.
Members can alos report directly to the ATSB (Australian Transport Safety Bureau) using the online reporting form using the following link: https://www.atsb.gov.au/voluntary/repcon_rail.aspx ;
Please report any radio communication issues directly to your ROL and also forward details to the AFULE.
